We started KalimbaShop in 2013 so we can reach out to you and all music lovers interested in African kalimba and mbira instruments and music. We are currently based in Antwerp, Belgium.
Juma instruments are handcrafted by Dingiswayo Juma, mbira maker from Zimbabwe. We are dedicated to producing and providing handmade quality instruments to music players all around the world.
The mbira and kalimba, also called nyunga nyunga, are old traditional African instruments. The mbira originates from Zimbabwe and the 15-key kalimba from southern Africa, most notably Mozambique. Other variations of lamellophones have been played for centuries across different African countries.
Juma Instruments are…
100% handcrafted and each instrument is unique
fully tuned and solidly build
made of selected quality natural and recycled materials
ready to play with other instruments (marimba, guitar, piano etc.)
suitable for studio recording and stage performance
Resources & Materials
We are passionate about conservation of the natural environment and sustainability. For our kalimba and mbira instruments we try to use as many recycled materials as possible. Examples are scrap metal, wood offcuts and leftover reuse of padding to protect the instrument in the packaging. We believe in building instruments that are very durable and last a long time, to further reduce the impact on the environment. We also refurbish used djembe drums to give them a second life and make sure that every tree and piece of wood gets used to the fullest. Read more about our drum projects here.
